STEPHANIE POWELL is Artistic Director of the Stephanie Powell DanseEnsemble, Glory to God Arts Ministry, In The Spirit Dance Ministry, and director of Baltimore DanceTech, Inc. Ms. Powell is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University with a Masters Degree in Liberal Arts. Her undergraduate degree in Dance Education with Certification and Performance/Choreography was obtained from Goucher College. She was on the faculty of the Baltimore School for the Arts for twenty-one years and is currently teaching at Carver Center for the Arts and Technology, Towson University, and Goucher College. Ms. Powell has also served as the ballet and modern dance instructor for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
As a guest choreographer throughout the United States, her works can be seen in the repertories of the Jacksonville University, Northern Illinois University, The Ballet Theater of Maryland, Towson University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Gettysburg Dance Center, and Anne Arundel Community College. Ms. Powell was guest artist and choreographer for the Berkeley Ballet Theater in California for seven consecutive summers.
Numerous awards and grants received by Ms. Powell have included the Individual Artist Award in Choreography from the Maryland State Arts Council for 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2005; Emerging Artists series at the Dance Place in Washington D.C. for 1998 and 1999; City Arts Grants awarded by the City of Baltimore for 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2005; and the Distinguished Black Marylander Award in 2000. On October 21, 2001, Ms. Powell was presented with the prestigious Lehman Award at a ceremony in Los Angeles, CA. She was honored for her contributions to the advancement and promotion of dance through performance, choreography, and education.
Dancers trained by Ms. Powell can be seen in various schools and companies such as Maurice Bejart, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Boston Ballet, Culberg Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, The Julliard School, SUNY at Purchase, NYU, and Columbia University to name a few. Her students can also be seen in the stage plays "The Lion King", “The Color Purple”, Movin’ Out, and Cirque du Soleil.
YVONNE E. WALKER is a graduate of Sojourner Douglass College with a degree in Business Administration. Miss Walker is a Senior Business Analyst at Old Mutual Financial Network. She is President of the Dance Guild of Baltimore and serves on the Board of Directors of the Stephanie Powell DanseEnsemble, Arts In The Neighborhood, and Dance Baltimore! She is the past president of the Sojourner Douglass College National Alumni Association. Miss Walker has always been a supporter of dance and has worked with several dance organizations through the years. Her “jobs” have ranged from costumer to manager. Her costume creations can be seen in Baltimore DanceTech’s production of The City Nutcracker as well BDT's annual spring concert. Miss Walker brings over 30 years of experience in operations management and customer service to Baltimore DanceTech.
